Do you care about what people think about you?
You may have your priorities in the wrong place. Caring about what people think about us can influence what we think about ourselves. They can turn us into people pleasers and we can end up pleasing people rather than ourselves. I worried a lot about what people thought about me until I realised that my worry was not going to stop them from having wrong thoughts about me.
In TD Jakes words “what people think about you is none of your business; your business is what you think about yourself.
What people think about you is irrelevant
People’s opinion of us should not be our concern. As difficult as it can sometimes be, to take our minds off what people say or think about us. It should be our goal to work on how we think about ourselves because we become our thoughts. What people think about us is irrelevant, it does not add or take away from us unless we allow it and sometimes it can be distractive to our progress. All they are; are just opinions and not the truth about us. We don’t want to become what they say, so why pay attention to them? People can be critical and judgemental if you care about what they think, you can find yourself always working to please them. Sometimes without even realising it, because you want them to think well of you and want to avoid their disapproval.
Your opinion of yourself and God’s opinion of you are the only ones that matter
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV
What we think about ourselves matters more than what others think about us, so we should be serious about who influences our thinking. If our thinking is occupied by what others think about us, then we are in trouble. Instead of caring about what they say, we must be serious about what God thinks of us. That should be our concern, our focus, our priority because that is what we want to become. He has got some great thoughts about us but unless we think about it we cannot become it. Let’s not be distracted by people’s opinion of us but allow God’s word to occupy our minds so we can become it.
People will always have an opinion
The fear of human opinion disables; trusting in God protects you from that. Proverbs 29:25 MSG
I have learnt that we can’t help or control people’s opinion of us. Everyone has an opinion and can choose to think what they like. We can’t control that, the only person we can control is ourselves, this applies to every area of our lives, we can’t control other people’s actions but we can choose to control our responses to them. It always boils down to us and our responses, when it comes to dealing with people, their actions are none of your business.
Allow God’s thought to influence your thinking
If we are going to think well of ourselves, we must allow God’s thought to influence our thinking not people. If you are like me who is desperate to be all that God has said about her. You will have to fight people’s view of you in your head and work on becoming obsessed with what God has said about you until you become immune to people’s opinion of you. That is where you want to be.
